Gold Plated, Rhodium Plated or Sterling Silver: A Guide to RUMI Materials

When you are choosing jewellery, the colour is only part of the story. The finish and the metal underneath it both matter. Here is a simple guide to the materials used across RUMI, and what to look for on an individual product page.

What does gold plated mean?

Gold plated jewellery has a layer of gold over another metal. In RUMI’s gold plated stainless steel range, stainless steel forms the base and gold plating provides the warm, gold-tone finish.

Gold plated is different from solid gold. It is also different from gold filled jewellery, which uses a different construction. If a product is described as gold plated, do not assume it is solid gold or a particular gold carat unless that detail is specifically stated.

What is rhodium plated stainless steel?

Rhodium plating gives jewellery a bright, silver-tone surface. RUMI’s silver-tone stainless steel pieces use rhodium plating over a stainless steel base.

You may see these pieces grouped under our “silver plated” collection names. Check the materials section on the product page for the more specific description: rhodium plated stainless steel. A silver colour does not, by itself, mean a piece is made from sterling silver.

Start with our silver-tone necklaces or earrings if you prefer a cooler finish.

How are sterling silver rings different?

RUMI’s rings have a sterling silver base. Sterling silver is a silver alloy, and it is different from stainless steel. A ring may also have a plated finish or decorative details, so its care needs depend on the complete design.

Look at the materials and available colour options on the individual ring product page. Do not assume that every silver-tone piece in the store uses the same base metal.

What should I know about pearl details and stones?

Some designs include pearl details, beads or cubic zirconia. We describe those details on individual product pages where they are confirmed. If you need to know more about a particular detail before ordering, ask us about the piece.

Decorative elements also affect cleaning. A method that suits plain metal may not suit a piece with pearl details or stones.

Choose your finish, then check the details

Gold tones can bring warmth to an outfit; silver tones can give a crisp, understated look. There is no rule that says you must stick to one. Choose what feels like you, whether that means matching finishes or mixing them.

Before buying, read the product’s materials and care sections. If you have a known metal sensitivity, ask for the details you need rather than treating a material name as a guarantee that it will suit your skin.

For either plated finish, gentle cleaning and dry storage are a good starting point. Avoid swimming, showering and harsh cleaners while wearing your pieces. Our jewellery FAQs explain the everyday care basics.
